Life is fleeting, and I realized it was time to make significant changes. After years in a job that no longer inspired me, I felt trapped and unfulfilled. Like many others during 2020, I recognized the need to prioritize my mental and spiritual health. I entertained the idea of a retreat in the Caribbean for a fresh start, hoping to improve my diet, exercise routine, and overall wellness. However, none of the retreats I found felt right. Then I stumbled upon a transformative program in Thailand that included Muay Thai, hiking, swimming, tours, and plenty of R&R. During our conversations, I asked, "Why Thailand?" My friend responded with, “I didn’t choose Thailand; Thailand chose me.” After contemplating this trip across the globe and a lot of prayer, I decided this journey was meant to be. Despite my family's initial concerns, they ultimately supported my decision. The retreat was set for 30 days, with an additional two quarantine days just before entering the program.
The Journey Begins
I booked my flight with Emirates Airlines, known for its luxurious service. This flight became even more elevated as the plane was nearly empty, and I had an entire row for myself, providing space and comfort for my journey. Due to a two-hour delay before leaving JFK airport, I endured a frantic connection in Dubai. But once in Bangkok, I decided to spend my first two nights at the Carlton hotel to rest and acclimate before heading to Phetchabun for the retreat.
A Scenic Ride to Transformation
After enjoyable days of relaxation at the Carlton, I was picked up for a scenic four-hour ride to the retreat. I couldn't take my eyes off the gorgeous yellow trees lining the roads. They bloomed for just 30 days each year, reflecting my own feeling of urgency and excitement about new beginnings. “It felt like blooming season for me!” I thought as I admired the stunning colors in the sky at sunset.

I soon arrived at my location, Battle Conquer Gym, and was given a tour of the facilities and my residence. Realizing that I had overpacked, I soon understood that I would have to shed some of my belongings. On my first day, I participated in my initial Muay Thai class. The program was designed to cleanse the mind, body, and spirit, and I was more than ready to embrace this opportunity.
Embracing the Experience
Eager to fully dive into the program, I enthusiastically embraced exercise and healthy eating. Although I chose the experience that focused on Muay Thai, I was thrilled to discover a variety of other exercise options. The Thai trainers were not only professionals but also incredibly funny, ensuring a fun-filled experience. The outdoor gym setting added an exciting dimension to the adventure. The package included three massages a week, and I was thrilled to have my first Thai massage, which was quite different from what I had anticipated. This eye-opening experience taught me something new: in Eastern cultures, massage is intended for maintenance, contrasting with the Western approach. “It was not a comfortable massage at all," more like a chiropractic session, "but when I walked out of that massage, I felt amazing!”
My days balanced intense training with exploration and relaxation. The Muay Thai classes challenged me physically and mentally, pushing me to my limits and instilling a sense of achievement. The instructors were experienced and supportive, guiding me in improving my technique and boosting my confidence. During my first few days, because I was jetlagged, I had a hard time sleeping. “It was then I realized how loud nature was.” It was a sensory experience. "I could hear dogs, birds, crickets, everything."
Exploring Thailand's Beauty
In addition to Muay Thai, I took advantage of hiking paths that showcased Thailand's breathtaking landscapes. The lush greenery and beautiful vistas provided a refreshing contrast to my previous life, filling me with energy. Swimming in the clear waters was another highlight, offering moments to unwind and reconnect with nature.
Personal Growth and Cultural Insights
As the weeks passed, I noticed significant improvements in my body and mindset. I felt stronger, more focused, and more attuned to myself than ever before. The holistic approach of the retreat enabled me not only to enhance my physical health but also to gain a deeper understanding of my emotional and spiritual well-being.
During my time there, I absorbed so much about the culture, from the tradition of taking off your shoes when entering a home to embracing the beauty of simplicity in life. My stay was made even more thrilling by experiencing the Thai New Year, where I joyfully participated in the exhilarating water fights of the Song Kran festival!
A New Chapter in Bangkok
My real adventure began when I left Phetchabun and headed to the bustling city of Bangkok after my 30 days were up. My journey didn't stop there; I set my sights on Phuket for an entire year! I moved into the stunning Grand Kamala Falls, where I enjoyed a luxurious apartment complete with pool access and all the amenities one could dream of. While soaking up the vibrant atmosphere, I decided to further my education by enrolling in remote classes. I proudly earned two certifications and racked up 30 college credits! My passion for Muay Thai continued to flourish during my time in Bangkok, with mornings dedicated to intense training sessions at the gym. My days were filled with studying, and I discovered an inspiring coworking space at Lub D, Patong. Every day, I immersed myself in my studies for a full eight hours. My commute to the coworking space came with breathtaking views of the ocean on one side and majestic elephants on the other.
I often marveled, "God, is this my life?" But it wasn't all work and no play! I embraced every opportunity for adventure, from thrilling ziplining and parasailing to delightful cooking classes and enchanting sunset cruises. I reveled in the excitement of it all, taking full advantage of the affordable experiences around me. And let's not forget Arm, the friend I made who became my trusty personal driver on his motorcycle, adding even more excitement to my daily routine! I connected with an amazing group called Black in Phuket. They were constantly hosting events, always had a spades game going, and knew all the best Afrobeat parties. Staying there was a breeze. "I found my own community in Thailand." It was the ultimate act of self-care!
Advice for Future Travelers
When asked what advice I'd give to anyone planning a trip to Asia, I enthusiastically exclaim, "Embrace using the baht currency! Be prepared for absolutely top-notch healthcare. You can live simply yet richly; peace of mind is priceless. The weather is beautiful, and the experience can be incredibly eye-opening. Give yourself space to allow for change to happen, to hear from God. "For me, it was a pivotal moment!"
By the end of the trip, I transformed my body and mindset. I returned home filled with a renewed sense of purpose and clarity about my future. The experience in Thailand taught me crucial lessons about self-care, resilience, and the courage to step out of my comfort zone.
