Studying abroad is undoubtedly one of the most cost-effective ways for students to experience living overseas. While the process may initially seem overwhelming due to concerns about logistics, budgeting, and cultural fit, these challenges are entirely surmountable. In 2008, Danielle confidently embraced the opportunity to study abroad, undeterred by these potential obstacles. Her decision led to an enriching experience she cherishes to this day, providing cultural immersion, language acquisition, and lifelong friendships.

Discovering the Right Destination

While pursuing her college degree, Danielle minored in French and sought an immersive experience that would extend beyond a typical vacation. Initially focused on Denmark and Sweden, she recognized that France's cultural richness matched her interests and aspirations. Through extensive research, she enrolled in a program at the Institute for American Universities (IAU) in Aix-en-Provence, located in the picturesque South of France. IAU was ideal for her, offering an enriching program centered around lessons in French history and culture. An American school located in France, this institute was famous for fostering cross-cultural connections.

Engaging Learning Environment

While attending IAU, Danielle actively participated in coursework that included French literature, history, and cultural excursion classes. One standout course was on the history of the French Revolution, which was challenging but not deterring. The professors were primarily expatriates, bringing unique perspectives that significantly enhanced the classroom experience. Outside of classes, the beautiful weather and welcoming locals made her studies that much more enjoyable.

A Taste of French Life

The immersion program provided lodging, breakfast, and dinner during the week, while lunch was the responsibility of the students. Danielle was placed with an Algerian host mother who spoke little English, giving her an excellent opportunity to practice her French daily. This arrangement forced her to step out of her comfort zone and gave her invaluable real-world language skills.

During her first month, excitement filled the air as she and her fellow students adjusted to life in France. Yet, as the novelty faded, the realities of living abroad emerged. Initially, she found lifestyle differences and the absence of certain comforts challenging. She also experienced homesickness. But these experiences helped foster her growth and adaptability, illustrating how challenges can enlighten your perspective.

A Moment of Celebration In France

The thrill of living abroad surged again during the November US elections. Danielle's host mother woke her and her roommates to celebrate Barack Obama's victory, a moment that resonated deeply with the students, many of whom had voted by absentee ballot. It was a proud and patriotic moment for Danielle and other US students as they couldn't have ever imagined what an experience like this would feel like, living in another country.

Thanksgiving was another highlight. The school organized a dinner that allowed students to experience a taste of home while abroad. This event not only satisfied their culinary cravings but also built a sense of community, making the students feel less isolated in a new land by bringing them a piece of their home culture.

European Exploration

While in Aix-en-Provence, Danielle embarked on exciting excursions to Marseille, Roussillon, Cannes, Avignon, Toulouse, Monte Carlo, Nice, and several other charming French towns. They discovered a town where the water was stunningly blue and breathtaking. Danielle also seized the chance to explore Berlin and absolutely adored her time there. During her time in Europe, Danielle even squeezed in a weekend trip to Spain, and ventured to Florence, Italy, Pisa, Germany, Belgium, and Switzerland. Among all these incredible destinations, Germany captured her heart. In Berlin, she explored a concentration camp brimming with profound history. 

Family Visits and Holiday Cheer

As the holiday season approached, the excitement of Danielle's parents' visit brought added joy. Together, they explored remarkable landscapes and historical sites in the South of France, creating treasured memories. The lavender fields, coastal towns, and ancient castles they visited were not just scenic but rich in history, making the experience even more special.

As December rolled around and the program neared its end, Danielle felt a wave of sadness. The friendships she formed and the experiences they shared created a bond she never expected. It became emotionally challenging to think about leaving this enchanting place behind.

Reflecting on the Experience

Danielle's journey in France went beyond academics. It was a holistic experience that broadened her worldview. The challenges she faced, language barriers, and cultural exchange, helped her grow in unexpected ways. The friendships formed with fellow students and locals were fundamental to enriching her experience and creating lasting bonds.

Danielle believes "every student should do a study abroad program if they can. We, as Americans, have such tunnel vision as it relates to how we can achieve our goals. Studying abroad will change your perspective and ultimately your life". It will make an impact. It's a bit unfortunate that there were very few black students who did the immersion program while Danielle was doing it, but this experience opened up Danielle's appetite for France and French culture. Even caused her to think about another career in French culture.
