In 2016, Jamilla faced unexpected health issues that began with late-onset acne. After consulting a specialist, she received a diagnosis that would change everything: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). At that time, PCOS was not widely recognized, and the treatments prescribed to her were ineffective. She felt frustrated and desperate for answers.

Determined to regain control, Jamilla explored dietary and lifestyle changes that could alleviate her symptoms. While these adjustments provided some relief, they fell short of her expectations. To mask her skin issues, she relied on makeup, but deep down, she knew this couldn't be the long-term solution.

The Journey to Lowering Chemical Load

Research suggested that reducing her exposure to chemicals in beauty products could significantly help. This prompted Jamilla to conduct a comprehensive review of her makeup collection. She made the bold choice to eliminate products containing harmful synthetic fragrances. While this was a necessary step, Jamilla felt overwhelmed and unsure about the best path forward.

During her exploration, she discovered that Argan oil, a natural remedy full of nutrients, might help manage her PCOS symptoms. However, sourcing high-quality Argan oil proved to be a challenge. Luckily, she had an upcoming trip to Morocco planned, a country famous for its production of premium Argan oil.

Trip to Morocco

Excited to be in Morocco, Jamilla was eager to dive into her vacation while confidently seeking the support she needed. Morocco was stunning! The rich culture, lively people, and the enticing aroma of spices filled the air. Although Jamilla's trip was initially for leisure, she had a clear mission in mind. She approached established brands with determination, aiming to secure not only premium products but also the best information about Argan Oil. Her initial efforts to connect with manufacturers were challenging. Information was scarce, and she skillfully navigated language barriers, cultural differences, and the hurdles of being a newcomer.

Jamilla, however, refused to give up. She knew that she had to change her approach. Because she did not have a history with these vendors, she had to use her charm. She told herself, "I'm gonna have to be more than compelling; you’re gonna have to be endearing". She visited the souk and tried to see if she would have luck with a purchase there. As fate would have it, her card wouldn't work on their POS system. So the vendor offered to take her to a bigger store, which would later turn out to be the manufacturer. Using her discernment to measure the risk she was taking by following this vendor, Jamilla assessed the situation, and she knew it was safe to follow him. While there, she met the owner of the company, Mr. Muhammad. She shared her vision for using Argan oil in her business. To her surprise, he responded warmly, “My sister, if you want to do this, I will help you.”

A New Partnership In The Making

The next day, Jamilla returned, bringing a friend for support. Mr. Muhammad decided to host them for lunch. During their conversation, she spoke with Mr. Muhammad's beauty scientist. She also learned that Mr. Muhammad was a staunch supporter of female businesses and that the suppliers that he worked with were all women-owned businesses. The atmosphere was friendly and inviting as they enjoyed lunch together, tasting sweet delights and ravishing Moroccan cuisine. After their meal, Jamilla toured the facility and experienced a powerful sense of affirmation. This partnership felt like a chance to make a real difference in her life.

Testing the Waters

Once back in the U.S., Jamilla was eager to test the Argan oil she obtained. She tested with herself, family, and friends. Within just three months, her skin significantly improved. Her confidence soared, but she still battled self-doubt. It took her mother's encouragement to help Jamilla realize she just needed to take that important leap of faith. Once she decided she would start her new business venture, it was then the real work began. This monumental step involved logistical challenges around packaging, pricing, and marketing. Yet, each decision fueled her excitement about embracing this new adventure. Because of the type of product it was, the packaging was important. It had to be packaged in glass bottles, and there had to be shatter testing done on the bottles. There needed to be a certain appeal to the look of the packaging. With renewed determination, Jamilla placed her first order with the manufacturer.

Launching the Business

On November 19, 2018, Jamilla launched her e-commerce site. She chose this date to coincide with Garifuna Settlement Day, celebrating her Belizean heritage. This launch was more than a job; it represented her cultural roots and a transformation born from her personal struggles. The launch received positive attention, and Jamilla's journey resonated with many. She had turned her battle with PCOS into a business that empowered her and others experiencing similar challenges. Soon after, Jamilla would be travelling all over the country to different conferences and trade shows. Her brand was getting notoriety, being featured in trades by beauty editors.

The Impact of Argan Oil

Jamilla’s dedication to quality and sustainable sourcing set her apart in a saturated market.

As her business grew, so did her commitment to educating others about PCOS and natural remedies. She started sharing her experiences on social media, connecting with a community of women seeking similar solutions. Jamilla literally and figuratively went the distance for what she believed in.

A Journey of Transformation

Jamilla's journey from battling PCOS to launching a successful brand highlights her resilience and the impact of natural solutions. Her experiences in Morocco not only provided her with top-tier Argan oil but also opened new doors in her life filled with purpose and passion.

Today, she continues to inspire individuals to embrace their health journeys and consider alternatives. Consider alternatives in your approach to finding remedies and alternatives to locations for doing business. Jamilla’s story is proof that sometimes, struggles lead to unexpected and rewarding paths.

Ultimately, this journey is not only about the products she created but also about her journey to Morocco, the connections she fostered, and the lives she touched along the way. When asked what advice she would give to someone considering starting a business that may take them overseas, she says, “If you have a dream, whatever it is, push through it.”

Know that you are powerful beyond your measure. You can do so many things; just give yourself a nudge. It’s gonna be okay. Embrace your power.
