New York City often draws visitors straight to Manhattan, but staying in the heart of the city can sometimes feel overwhelming and exhausting. The good news is that the city’s public transit system is reliable and efficient, making it easy to explore beyond Manhattan without missing out on the energy and excitement. For a more relaxed yet vibrant experience, consider basing yourself in Long Island City, Queens. It offers a perfect balance: close enough to Manhattan to soak in its vibe, yet far enough to avoid the crowds and noise.

This guide lays out a three-day itinerary that highlights some of the best spots within and outside the busy touristy areas of Manhattan, combining history, nature, art, and great food. Whether you want to explore hidden gems or enjoy iconic views, this plan will help you experience New York City like a local.

New York City

Day One: Discover Roosevelt Island and Midtown Gems

Start your adventure with a trip to Roosevelt Island, a small island in the East River with a rich history and stunning views. The best way to get there is by subway train or the Roosevelt Island Tramway, but I suggest taking the subway there and leaving by Tram. The Roosevelt Island Tramway goes between the island and 60th Street and 2nd Avenue. The tram ride itself is a unique experience, offering aerial views of the city skyline and the river.

Once on Roosevelt Island, take time to explore the peaceful parks and historical landmarks like the Ruins of 19th-Century Smallpox Hospital, Roosevelt Island Lighthouse, and the Girl Puzzle Monument. In spring, the cherry blossoms bloom beautifully, creating a perfect backdrop for a leisurely walk. The Roosevelt Island Bridge and the Cityscape set against the East River make for vibrant pictures. The island’s quiet atmosphere contrasts sharply with the busy city, making it a refreshing start to your trip.

Upon returning to Manhattan via the tram, head to Grand Central Terminal via the 6 train. This iconic terminal is more than just a subway stop. It offers a long history, dining, shopping, and architecture. Take advantage of a free tour which tells you about how hard Jackie Kennedy Onassis fought to make the terminal a landmark, admire its stunning architecture, grab a coffee, and soak in the lively atmosphere. From there, walk to Bryant Park, a green oasis surrounded by skyscrapers. Just before reaching the park, stop at the New York Public Library’s main branch. The library offers free exhibits and beautiful reading rooms that are worth a visit.

End your day with dinner near Bryant Park, then take a stroll to Times Square to experience its famous lights and energy at night. This mix of calm and excitement sets the tone for your New York City trip.

Day Two: Explore Hudson Yards, The High Line, and Art in the Meatpacking District

Begin day two at Hudson Yards, a modern development on Manhattan’s west side. Visit the mall for shopping or dining, and don’t miss the Vessel, a striking honeycomb-like structure you can climb for panoramic views of the city. Next, walk the High Line, an elevated park built on a former railway track. The path stretches several miles along Manhattan’s west side, offering gardens, art installations, and views of the Hudson River. Make sure to stop at Pier 57, where you can relax in the rooftop park and enjoy waterfront views. Continue to Little Island, a new public park on the Hudson River with unique landscaping and performance spaces. It’s a great spot to rest and take in the city from a different angle.

Later in the afternoon, choose between two excellent art destinations: the Whitney Museum of American Art or Mercer Labs. The Whitney focuses on contemporary American art and is located in the Meatpacking District, a neighborhood known for its trendy restaurants and nightlife. Mercer Labs offers a more experimental art experience and is located further downtown near the World Trade Center. If you visit the Whitney, stay in the Meatpacking District for dinner. The area has a variety of restaurants, from upscale dining to casual eateries. If you choose Mercer Labs, consider dining near the World Trade Center memorial, where you can reflect on the city’s history and enjoy a meal nearby.

Day Three: Spend a Day in Riverdale, The Bronx

For your final day, plan a trip to Riverdale in the Bronx. This neighborhood offers a quieter, suburban feel with beautiful parks and historic sites. The commute is longer, so it’s best to dedicate the whole day here. To get to this area, make your way to Grand Central and then take the Metro North train. Be sure to look for the Hudson Line. Start in Spuyten Duyvil, a riverside area with scenic views and walking trails. Visit Villa Charlotte Bronte, a charming historic building with unique architecture and a story that reflects the area’s past. This is private property, so you won't be able to go on the property, but you won't be there long, and the views from outside are just as magical.

After leaving Villa Charlotte Bronte, head to the breathtaking Wave Hill Gardens, a short Uber ride away. This 28-acre site features lush greenery, vibrant seasonal flowers, and meticulously curated gardens. Enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Hudson River, which provides a stunning backdrop. Relax on an Adirondack chair under a flowering tree or a bench on the terrace overlooking the river, surrounded by nature's peaceful sounds. Explore themed gardens, from the fragrant herb garden to vibrant annuals and perennials, each with unique charm. Encounter local wildlife like birds and butterflies, enhancing the enchanting experience. Bring your camera for stunning photographs. Whether you relax or stroll, Wave Hill offers a perfect escape into nature's tranquility. Immerse yourself in this serene oasis in the concrete city. This day offers a chance to see a different side of New York City, one that many visitors overlook but locals appreciate for its calm and character. Riverdale’s green spaces and peaceful streets provide a refreshing contrast to the city’s busier parts. Take your time exploring, enjoy lunch at the local cafe on-site, and use their free shuttle to take you back to the Metro North Station. Take the Metro North back to Manhattan for dinner and finish the evening there.
